Seven Day Weekend

I recently read a book called the Seven Day Weekend. It is about an approach that a brazilian company called SemCo is using. A sort of HyperDemocracy among employees. The hiring process is very stringent, which I think is a necessary prerequisite for what they do:

  • Employees as a group determine their hours.
  • Employees as a group determine their pay.
  • Employees as a group determine their dresscode.
  • Employees as a group vote on whether to take on new business ventures.
  • ALL meetings are optional.
  • 2 Seats at the board meetings are available to any employee on a first come / first serve basis.
  • Very strong trusting in intuition.
  • Job shifting and titles are at employee whim (even w/ stories of an employee who put President as his title on a business card!).
Definitely seems like a cool company. If OL (my current company) goes under, they'd probably be my first look -- even though they are in Brazil.
